Brexit and Its Impact on Economic Growth and the European Union

Brexit, the decision of the United Kingdom (UK) to leave the European Union (EU), has had significant impacts on both the UK and the EU's economic growth. While the long-term effects of Brexit are still uncertain, there are already some observable impacts in the short and medium term. One of the most immediate effects of Brexit has been a decline in economic growth in both the UK and the EU. Following the 2016 Brexit referendum, the UK's GDP growth rate slowed down, falling from 1.9% in 2016 to 1.4% in 2018 (World Bank, 2021). Similarly, the EU's GDP growth rate also slowed down, falling from 2.4% in 2017 to 1.4% in 2019 (World Bank, 2021).
